Donnie Darko

Hey fellas!!! Back again to the blog hunh?? Yes now it’s another movie which did not even go past its budget even in its worldwide collection. It’s the critically acclaimed - Donnie Darko that you are going to read here. The film was released in 2001 and was budgeted with 4.5 million dollars and its gross worldwide collection was only 4.1 million dollars (Courtesy: Wikipedia)

Casted by Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone and Mary McDonnell, Donnie Darko is the story of a teen hallucinated with end-of-world visions and a disturbing bunny rabbit faced man, who often urges Donnie to do a few crimes. The movie has a dual ending and I would recommend the readers to watch the movie because the movie is worth to be watched and enjoyed.

Donne Darko is a high school teen who is troubled with hallucinations of end-of-world visions. One night, on hearing some strange voice, he comes out of his house and sees a man with a strange bunny face. The rabbit-man says Donnie that the world is going to end in 28 days 42 minutes and 24 seconds. Suddenly a plane's engine falls on his house's roof. Nobody is injured but this incident shocks the neighborhood. Few more similar encounters with the bunny faced man urges Donnie to break the water pipe line of his school, and also once he sets his school and Jim Cunningham’s (the TV celebrity who makes programs to help people come out of their fears and lead a healthy social life) private house on fire . Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) falls in love with Gretchen (Jena Malone), his class mate and both go out for dating. Once Donnie throws a party where Gretchen comes in and they make love in a room. Then Donnie suddenly sees a kind of different visions urging him to move out of his house. Donnie, Gretchen and a couple of their friends go to a nearby house where his grandma lived and they start exploring the house. Now a couple of high-school bullies come over there and start in a fight with Donnie and Gretchen. During their fight, Gretchen is thrown on the road where a car comes by and runs over her. Gretchen dies on the spot. Two guys get out of the car, one with the bunny-rabbit costume coming directly from his party. Irritated, Donnie shoots the bunny-faced man and kills him on the spot. He takes Gretchen to his house and gets the keys to his car to get her to hospital. When he comes out of his house, he sees a time portal opening over the roof of his house. He fled in his car to the hospital. A plane coming from LA to their city, Virginia, in which his mother and little sister are returning from a dance competition, gets stuck up in turbulence and one of its engines falls down on their roof.

Now all this is happening in another universe, Tangent universe as the director calls it. In the primary universe, Donnie does not get out his house in the first scene to meet the bunny faced man. The engine of the plane falls on the house and kills him. All the above incidents happen in Tangent universe as part of some cosmological process of branching from Primary universe and the creation of a new one. The bunny faced man is indeed the man he shot on the road, his elder sister's boyfriend, Frank. He is from the other dimension and he was actually trying to help Donnie to understand that whatever is happening with him, his hallucinations, love, death of friends etc is happening in Tangent universe and not the primary one. Once the branching of Tangent universe is done, the primary universe gets reset to the starting date of this process. All this story starts on Oct-2, 1988 and the tangent universe gets branched off on Oct-30th, 1988. After it gets branched off, the primary universe gets reset to Oct-2nd date. Everyone forgets whatever has happened, with little fragments of memory.

The last scene clearly depicts Donnie's body being taken away in an ambulance and the engine is removed from his house, and everyone is crying. Gretchen comes in a cycle, and sees this incident but she could not recognize what has happened. Because all of her memory is reset on Oct-2 on which day she has not met Donnie. She waves her hand to his mom with an air of mutual recognition.

This is one of a difficult kind of movies to take from the novel. People would find hard to comprehend what the director wants to convey and that could be the probable cause of this movie's failure. The concept of existence of multi-universes is still in a theoretical phase and I am sure this would not have reached a wide range of the movie's audiences. Still this movie didnt escape from appreciation from our eyes!!!

Watch the movie and read the above review and please do post your valuable comments.

The Ninth Gate

Hey guys, the purpose of me writing this blog is to watch those movies that have not widely reached the global audiences or yourself, even if you are a terrific movie-lover and provide you with a synopsis thereby stimulating your interest into the movie. Many a movie is not seen just because we do not like its poster or the hero, or due to lack or abundances of erotic scenes or due to a hell lot of violence. Here's one of the movies, may be I’ll call an underrated one with not so much of wide-spread audience. Johnny Depp has given his performance, as usual(!) but the movie is not about his performance but about the type of role that he has taken. The role fascinated me to write a review, else I wouldn’t have been. The movie's name is: The Ninth Gate - released in 1999 based on the novel "The Club Dumas" by Arturo PĂ©rez-Reverte and is directed by one of the prolific directors in Hollywood, Roman Polanski.

Johnny (Dean Corso) plays the role of a New York book-authenticator, or to be precise, a rare book dealer who validates the authenticity of the books and provides an estimated price of the book if sold or auctioned. The movie opens with the scene of a middle-aged man, Tefler hastily scribbling something on a paper and hanging himself on to the ceiling lights. After quite sometime with scenes moving with Corso's business at a house estimating few books and at his store, the movie gets into its real business. Corso is called by Balkan, a history professor at a university to validate his copy (one of the three books) of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows, written by Aristide Torchia in the 17th century who was burnt alive with his works allegedly having dealt mainly with the raise of devil, Satan on his three books. Balkan suspects the genuineness of his copy and sends Corso to investigate the other 2 copies which are in Portugal and Spain. As a payment, he provides a blank, signed check to him. (Pinch==>Boy-o-boy! a blank check and a trip to Europe! What else you need on earth?).

Corso takes the book and meets Mrs.Tefler and asks her if she knew anything about the book. Also says that Tefler sold the book to Balkan and he is authenticating it. She says that her husband was restless during his last days and shows the place where he hung himself. Corso leaves the place and keeps the book in his store and goes home where Mrs.Tefler again makes her appearance. She has sex with him on a failed attempt to get the book. When Corso returns to his bookshop, he sees his friend murdered in a strange position - hanging upside down with a leg folding half way! Confused, Corso tries to back-up from the task but Balkan offers him to pay more money.

Corso leaves to Portugal and checks-in at a hotel, where he sees a mysterious lady following him wherever he goes and when he tries to reach out to her, she disappears (Pinch==>Come on Corso, All ladies are like this!!) On asking she introduces herself as something like a student (Pinch==>Now.. what do you mean by 'something like a student'??!!) The 2 book owners get murdered after he investigates those books. Balkan keeps on ringing out Corso wherever he goes and maintains a low profile.

The mysterious lady exhibits supernatural capabilities when Corso is attacked a couple of times by a strange man in an attempt to steal the book from him. To avoid such attacks, Corso keeps the book in his hotel room in a hidden place. He finds that each of the three books had 3 clues in them, making it 9 clues for the procedure to raise the Devil. After his long day of investigations, when he returns home, he finds the book stolen from the room! On checking at the reception, he comes to know that Mrs.Tefler has taken it with the strange man giving her company. He sees Mrs.Tefler moving in a car ahead of him.

The mysterious lady and Corso get set into a car and follow them and reach a building where some kind of a regular, periodic ritual is conducted, believed to raise the Devil. Both Corso and the lady get into the building and disguise themselves in weird clothes as many other men did. All of a sudden, Balkan makes his presence and kills Mrs.Tefler and snatches the book from her. He flees to a nearby fort and arranges the 9 pages got from the 3 books in the order it has to be and prepares to his start the ritual of raising the Devil. Corso comes over there but Balkan hits him down with his gun and does the ritual. The ritual was to set himself on fire after telling some mantras kind of stuff. But the attempt fails and Balkan dies engulfed in fire. Corso, regains strength and takes the pages on the table and runs out of the fort where he sees the mysterious lady standing by his car. She has sex with him (Pinch==>a hot scene dude!!) exhibiting some kind of weirdness in her eyes. The next morning when both drive together in the car, Corso asks her why Balkan died even though he did arrange the pages correctly and also did the ritual properly. The lady says that the 9th page was a fake one and the real page is in CENIZA brother's shop where he finds the final 9th page with an engraving very similar to the mysterious lady, thereby showing the real way to raise the devil and to the immortality of the raiser, Corso.

The movie ends with this scene. The ending is confusing and I think that is the reason for this movie not doing a great deal at the box office. There is no explanation for who that woman was? Was she a guardian angel of Corso? Then why is she having sex with him?? Do angels have sex? Well that is another controversy.. I don’t want to go into that. What happens to Corso when he goes into the fort with so much of shining light? What does he interpret on the Ninth page that he gets from the Ceniza brother's shop? All these questions were the answers for the not-well-doing of the movie. May be the director did not want to explain such stuff and inspire anyone of the rituals :-) Already religion has lot of complications because of us and may be he didn’t want to add more spice to it :-)

The Road Trip: Beer Pong

Hey guys.. how are you.. Just another ordinary day with a great movie to present here.

Most of you guys (and gals) would have enjoyed or rather "secretly-enjoyed" the movie 'Road Trip'

that went around the world in the year 2000. Now the same team has come up with a sequel to the 2000's one. And that is - "Road trip:Beer Pong". Not much of the cast from 2000 has made it up to the Beer Pong but we have our own DJ Qualls in here leading the movie narration with the freshers - not to mention a few hot chicks!!!

So just now completed watching the movie, I thought of writing a review or to be more accurate - a synopsis of the movie. And here it goes.

Andy and Katie love each other from their teens, Andy does his studies at the university of Ithaca and

Kati at the Cornell. Andy and Jake are the regional champs of the Beer-Pong competition. Now for those who don't know what a Beer-Pong competition is: You need to throw a ping-pong ball into a triangularly-arranged Beer cups at the other end of the table. The cups will be adjacent to one another and they'll be half filled with beer. 2 teams will play it usually from either end of the tables. One will try to put the ball in the other's cups and the other will defend it by pushing the ball away from falling into their cups. If the balls fall into the cups, the defending team should drink that cup of beer and take that cup off the table. The team that puts its balls in most of the cups wins. Funny isn't it???

Now back to the story:

Andy sings a song half-nakedly and records it in his handy cam that Korkin uploads into YouTube without Andy's knowledge. Next morning Katie comes to Ithaca and tells Andy that she got transferred here to be with him.

They plan to celebrate their anniversary that night. But Korkin comes up with the message that the world championship Beer-Pong competition is going to be held at Atlanta. Meanwhile, Andy sees a cut-out of his first girl-friend, Jenna and gets connected to her through the Internet. So now Andy and Jake now look out for funding for their transport and also the arrangements to meet Jenna who is in Illinois.

Jake takes them to Arash, a wealthy Indian. During their talk, Arash's father gets de-throned and his enemies create some nuisance that all of a sudden, thinking Arash to be a fugitive and CIA gets him and also Andy, Jake and Korkin into custody. Somehow CIA releases them after some hard trouble. Now the fun begins.. They steal a cab to reach Atlanta. And they give a lift to a hitchhiker on their way, and get into some serious shooting trouble. The hitch-hiker lady grabs their stolen cab and fleds away.

Lost, our 4 guys start praying to god at the roadside. A bus stops by and its the "Chastity until marriage girls"!!!

The 4 guys get into the bus and all of them go to Nashville for a stop, have food and camp-fire and then, start to the competition the next morning. Korkin gets hooked up with Sarah, the leader of the Chastity group and successfully has "S__" with her. Andy meets Jenna the next day and sings his song in a stage which again comes into the YouTube ( Poor guy got lot of pain because of Youtube.. He must sue YouTube !!!) he feels that Katie is too good that he should not get into any serious relationship with Jenna. Katie sees this video and comes to Atlanta and lands at the competition arena at exact time.

At the Grand Finale, our heroes Jake and Andy gets a lot beaten like hell from the current champion. They have 2 more cups left whereas the champ has almost all of his cups. Remember... The guy with more number of cups wins.

Now its turning point guys!!! Its Andy's turn.. Katie goes near the current champ Raz-R and kisses him and creates a distraction. He has a Beer cup in his hand. When he kisses, Andy puts the ball in the cup he holds and this is another rule of the game!!! If the opponent puts the ball in the cup in your hands, all the cups you have on the table on your side goes off!!! So, Andy wins and is the current champ!!!

This is the end of the movie with Andy and Katie getting married after their college days, Korkin and Sara get married, Jake runs a Beer-Pong coaching class and Arash gets hooked up with his own home-town Tandoor's girl. Kyle (Qualls) does PhD in Ithaca.

The movie is quite good at its comedy track. But not like the Road-Trip 2000 movie. I would give a 3 out of 5 for the Beer Pong.

Not much of adult scenes except for a couple of showbiz. A nice entertainer. You can watch a great quality video in this link:

Believe me, the quality is crystal clear.

Thanks guys for reading the review. Post me comments here after watching the movie.

The Ugly Truth

Cast:
Katherine Heigl and
Gerard Butler

Last Saturday, I had a pretty odd time and thought of hitting a movie. But i have seen almost all the movies that are running in my nearest AMC and for few of them i was not so interested. This movie is one among them. My friend was desperate to watch this movie and i went to it half-heartily. Despite, the movie was quite good in its comedy and a couple of 'bachelors-scenes' :-) So i thought of writing a review for the movie and here's it.

Review:
Yet another movie on men's and women's perspective of a healthy relationship. Butler's new face after the movie 300.
To start off, Katherine Heigl,a morning show producer fails to get the numbers of audiences for her show. Her Boss puts her into a test to get the numbers up. Katherine fails in the test (Obviously.. only then Butler can peep in and screw up things and her :-) ) Butler runs the show 'The ugly truth' where he talks about men's and women's view of one another and how their sexual and friendly relationship gets affected because of that.

Katherine's (Kat) boss hires Butler to run his show during Katherine's show time and Kat's show is replaced with his. Kat gets irritated with this and always on the lookout to stamp Butler but Butler outsmarts her in every turn.

On an irritated night Kat when trying to catch hold of her cat ( :) ), sees a handsome man in her opposite apartment and falls for him. But she could not express her interest for him.Butler comes to know that Kat is romantically-challenged and tries to help her out in this matter with a couple of ideas to change her way of speech, dress, hair etc., These scenes have lot of A-rated humour.
Finally Butler and Katherine begin to love one another and unite in a "hot scene" at the end.

Alert!!! Movie is R-rated. Don't bring your kids and get embarrassed!
